Day 5: Jin Ah Jo Jewellery sales report from 2017~2026

Sales report that ChatGPT visualise for me.

It is already June, and I cannot believe that almost half the year has gone by. My AI studies are going well, and I have been learning a tremendous amount. Honestly, it can sometimes be difficult to keep up. Between my part-time job and my strong desire to continue creating in the studio, finding enough time for everything can be challenging. And of course family commitments!!

As I have already mentioned, I lost one of my biggest stockists in Melbourne earlier this year. What I really need now is an assistant or agent who can work with me when I need support. Looking back on 17 years of presenting my work through e.g.etal, I had one poor year of sales and was suddenly let go. In hindsight, I think I gave too much of my time and energy to that relationship and not enough to building my own practice independently. I am definitely frustrated with myself when I think about how naive and trusting I was.

Thankfully, they had sent me Recipient Created Tax Invoices (RCTIs) for the entire 17 years, and I was able to use them to generate a comprehensive sales report with the help of ChatGPT, Claude, and Google Gemini.

ChatGPT produced a remarkable 12-page report that included:

  1. Executive Summary

  2. Strongest Product Categories

  3. Best-Selling Forms and Designs

  4. Strongest Colour Trends

  5. Price Structure Analysis

  6. Most Important Strategic Discoveries

  7. Relationship Between Experimental Work and Commercial Work

  8. Display and Merchandising Recommendations

  9. Recommendations for The Big Design Market

  10. Future Collection Direction

  11. Overall Conclusion

  12. Suggested Core Permanent Collection, Colour Palette, and Final Observations

The report was incredibly detailed and has been invaluable in helping me prepare for The Big Design Market in Melbourne this December.

Comparing all the report of analysis

Claude approached the data differently, presenting a series of clear bar graphs and visual analyses. It also broke down the price ranges I should focus on for the event, helping me better understand where my strongest sales opportunities lie.

Gemini was particularly interested in my more recent collections shown through e.g.etal, including Deep Pool, the silver inlay works, and the combination of gold and blackened mild steel. It also identified the new ring collection developed through the Hand & Algorithm project as a strong direction for future growth. Interestingly, Gemini highlighted the importance of consistently documenting and sharing the process through blog posts and Instagram, suggesting that storytelling may be just as important as the objects themselves.

For years, I thought those invoices were simply paperwork. Now, with the help of AI, they have become one of the most valuable records of my practice — revealing patterns, strengths, and opportunities that would have been almost impossible for me to see on my own.

I imagine this kind of analysis is a significant part of what business consultants are paid to do, often at considerable cost. As someone who has spent the last 17 years primarily focused on making jewellery, having access to this level of insight into my own practice feels both surprising and exciting.

What interests me most is not simply the sales data itself, but what it reveals. It helps me build an archive of my practice, understand patterns that were previously invisible, and identify opportunities for future growth. In that sense, it serves two important purposes: preserving the history of the work and helping shape its future.

For a long time, making was enough. Now I find myself equally interested in understanding what I have made, why certain works resonate with people, and where the practice might go next. As long as these discoveries expand my own capabilities and emerge from my own hand and experience, I find them genuinely exciting.
