Day 100: Craft Habit 100/100 Vol.2: My LaLaLand

I have finally reached Day 100 again and this time it is Craft Habit 100/100 Vol.2: My LaLaLand. I started writing this blog on the 2nd March 2021 and I am finishing it today. As I planned from the start this blog is a project as part of Radiant Pavilion 2021 and this time I have been focusing on producing a new series of work inspired by my work environment. Under COVID restrictions in Melbourne the group exhibition, Studio 24: place, space, pace went online however, luckily enough the window show at Small Space Jewellery is still going until the 21st September.

It is a great thing to celebrate my consistent love of making for 100 days and during this particular time of uncertainty I have enjoyed writing, treating it as a precious time to reflect on my work and myself. Through translating English into Korean for each day’s writing I am more mindful and try to write and develop in a way that gives me a better ability to express myself.

This Day 100 post is a dedication to my great mentor, Viliama Grakalic.

1) My new workshop at Mycelium Studios

Pipe lines at Mycelium Studios, tap and die for screw cut ends and parts and fittings for old watces

: My workshop is in this multidisciplinary creative studio and co-working hub called Mycelium Studios. This huge factory building was built in 1930s and I am sharing a room (studio 24) with 4 other jewellery artists.

Reading the place and space of Mycelium one thing that attracted my attention was the reticulation pipes and cable structure across the ceiling. They are interestingly connected and are part of the supporting infrastructure of the building. It shows connection, interaction and function.

I started to make smaller size pipe structures to reflect the pipe connectivity in the ceiling. The interchangeability created by cutting screw threads was really intriguing and the tap and die set became a necessary tool. Remaking the parts and fittings of old watches inherited from a family member and adding them to the pipe structures enabled me to add emotional value to my work.

2) Broken Pipe series

You will see broken and disconnected pipes wherever there are pipe structures. The old pipes have holes and uneven surfaces from wear and tear. Covered with dust it is unknown if they still perform their function and why they are left disconnected. Has the dirty old pipe has been left just like that for a while and forgotten? Using it as inspiration I made this extended tubular work to be part of the structure. Also connecting these broken pipes I have somehow found something to empower me and restore spirit and strength over this hard time of uncertainty so I can keep going.

3) Pipe line and Leakage

: It has been so much fun to complete this necklace finally! They are all 23 different components individually made including screw-cut necklace clasps. 68cm length brass, mild steel, perforated mild steel, steel, silver, silver solder, wood, plastic, neoprene, fittings and parts of old watches, capacitors, found objects, acrylic, oil, wax and patina. All small components are interchangeable with screw ends. Another outcome from the new pipe structure series. Threading 23 components all together and for inspiration I looked back to one year ago when I experienced a couple of rain leaks from the studio ceiling. Perhaps the idea for the new series was initiated then and I could not help but make one (pendant) illustrating rusty stain on mild steel sheet from the leakage.

4) Pipe Miniature (Small Objects Series)

I have created so many components for this series. They were made using new materials, old work, collection from my daughter’s toy box, parts and fittings of old watches that my father-in-law sent. Assembling and disassembling components means the structure of the work is interchangeable. It also means I could revive a very crucial factor that was once always in my work “playfulness”. The interchangeability is granted by each component’s screw-cut-end design using a tap and die set.

Materials: Brass, mild steel, perforated mild steel, steel, silver, silver solder, plastic, fittings and parts of old watch, lego, cubic zirconia, wax, patina, oil and found object. The components are interchangeable with screw cut end.

5) Window Exhibition

: As part of this 2-story gallery/workshop/office there is a triangle window space at Small Space Jewellery. Not too big or small, but right size for displaying small objects. I have a 3 step display plan: one is for pendants with colourful frames, the other is for brooches and small pipe miniature objects with frames and the last is PVC plastic pipe structure hanging on the wall for my very recent series, “pipe way”

마침내100일에 도달하였고 이번 프로젝트는 “크라프트 습관 100/100 제 2권: 내 라라랜드” 이다. 지난 3월 21일부터 쓰기 시작하여 오늘 마침표를 찍는다. 이 프로젝트를 시작할 때 계획했던 것처럼 이 블로그는 래디언트 퍼빌리온 2021의 일환이며 이번에는 내 작업실 환경에서 영감을 받아 새로운 시리즈의 작품을 만드는 것에 촛점을 맞추었다. 멜버른의 코비드 봉쇄조치 아래 단체전 이었던 “스튜디오24:장소, 공간, 속도”는 온라인 전시회가 되었지만 나는 그래도 운 좋게도 스몰 스페이스 쥬얼리 에서의 위도우 전시는 그대로 9월 21일까지 계속 하기로 하였다. 

100일동안 내 꾸준한 만들기에 대한 사랑을 기념하는 것은 훌륭한 일이다 특히 이 불확실성의 시대에 나는 글을 쓰는 것을 즐겼고 그것을 내 작업과 자신에 대해 성찰하는 귀중한 시간으로 다루었다. 매일 블로그에 쓴 영어를 한국어로 번역하면서 나는 좀 더 집중하였고 스스로의 표현력 향상을 이루려고 하였다. 

이 100일째의 포스트는 내 위대한 스승이셨던 빌리아마 그라칼릭 선생님께 바친다 

1) 마이셀리움 스튜대오의 내 새 작업실

내 작업실은 종합적인 창작 스튜디오로 많은 사람들이 함께 작업을 하는 곳으로 “마이셀리움” 이라고 불리는 곳에 위치해 있다. 이 큰 공장건물은 1930년대에 지어졌고 나는 여기 24번 작업실에 네명의 다른 장신구 작가들과 함께 독립적으로 일을 한다. 마이셀리움 스튜디오의 장소와 공간을 쭉 훓어보면서 가장 내 주위를 끈 것은 복잡하게 얽혀있는 파이프와 전선들의 구조물이 가득 찬 천장이었다. 그것들은 흥미롭게 연결되거나 연장되어 건물의 기능을 뒷받침 하고 있다. 그것들은 연결, 상호연관 그리고 기능적인 면을 보여주고 있다. 나는 천장의 파이프들의 연결성을 반영하는 몇개의 작은 사이즈의 파이프 구조물을 만들기 부터 시작하엿다. 파이프 끝을 나사못 처럼 만드는 것에서 창조된 상호교환성은 굉장히 흥미진진 하였고 탭과 다이세트는 내 필수적인 용구가 되었다. 가족 중 한분으로 부터 물려받은 오래된 시계들의 부품들을 다시 만들어 내 파이프 구조물에 덧붙인 것은 내가 내 작업에 감성적인 요소를 첨가할 수 있도록 만들어 주었다. 

2) 부서진 파이프 시리즈

우리는 파이프 구조물이 있는 어디에서나 깨어지고 연결이 끊긴 파이프들을 볼 수 있다. 세월이 흐르면서 파이프들에 구멍이 나고 표면이 거칠어 지기도 한다. 먼지에 뒤덮여서 그것들은 기능을 잃고 연결이 끊어지게 된다. 더럽고 오래된 파이프는 그렇게 한동안 남겨져 있다가 잊혀지는 것일까?  이것에 영감을 받아서 나는 연장된 튜브형태를 가진 것을 구조물의 일부로 만들어 보았다. 또한 이러한 부서진 파이프들을 연결하면서 나는 이 불확실한 시대에 다시 내게 힘을 주고 기와 용기를 북돋아 계속 다시 만들게 하는 어떤 것을 발견할 수 있었다.  

3) 파이프 라인과 누수

이 목걸이를 마침내 완성하는 것은 참 즐거운 일이었다. 모두 각 스물세개의 개별적으로 만들어진 부속품으로 나사 컷으로 완성된 목걸이 장식을 비롯해 68 센티미터의 길이로 황동, 연강, 천공연강, 철, 은, 은땜, 나무, 플라스틱, 네오프린, 오래된 시계 부품들, 콘덴서, 발견된 재료들, 아크릴, 오일, 왁스 그리고 파티나가 재료료 사용되었다. 모든 작은 부속품들은 나사 끝으로 되어 있어서 서로 상호교환이 가능하다. 파이프 구조물 시리즈의 또 다른 하나의 결과물이다. 이 스물 세개의 부품들을 모두 연결하면서 그리고 하나의 영감으로 나는 일년전 스튜디오 작업실 천장에서 비가 새는 것을 몇번 경험한 것을 기억하였다. 아마도 이 새로운 시리즈는 그때 시작되었을 지도 모른다. 그래서 누수에 의한 연강위에 녹이 번지는 것을 그려보는 하나의 작품(목걸이)을 만들어 보지 않을 수 없었다. 

4) 파이프 미니어쳐 (작은 오브제 시리즈)

이 새로운 시리즈를 위해서 나는 많은 부속품들을 만들었다. 그것들은 모두 새로운 재료, 내 오래된 작업, 수집품, 내 딸의 장난감 상자 그리고 시아버지가 보내주신 오래된 시계의 부품들이 사용되어 만들어진 것이다. 부품들을 조립하고 분해할 수 있다는 것은 상호교환성을 의미하고 이것은 또한 내가 내 작업의 잊혀진 하나의 중요한 특징인 “유희성” 을 살려냈다는 것을 의미하기도 한다. 이 상호교환성은 각각의 부품에 탭과 다이 세트를 사용해 나사로 끝을 만듦으로서 부여되었다. 

5) 윈도우 전시회

겔러리, 스튜디오 그리고 사무실을 겸한 2층 건물의 스몰 스페이스 쥬얼리에는 삼각형으로 된 윈도우 전시장의 공간이 있다. 그리 크지도 작지도 않게 작은 오브제를 전시하기에 딱 알맞은 사이즈이다. 나는 3단계의 전시계획이 있었다: 첫번째는 다색의 프레임을 사용해 팬던트들을 걸고, 두번째로 브로치와 작은 파이프 미니어쳐를  또한 프레임에 전시하면, 마지막으로 내 새 작품들인 “파이프 웨이” 시리즈를 위해 피브이씨 플라스틱 파이프 구조를 만들어 벽에 걸도록하는 것이다. 

이 윈도우 전시는 스몰 스페이스 쥬얼리 : 주소- 365A St.Georges Rd. Fitzroy North 이며 9월 21일까지 있을 것이다.
