Day 26 : Work 26. Just like the pink river dolphin living in Amazon river.

Introducing new colour, pink! They look great on the black paper.

Pink is one of the most beautiful natural colours. We could find pink on minerals, flowers, birds, moth, salt lake, pink sand beach, and even some dolphin living in Amazon river. It is not just little girls’ colour. Stay tuned to find out what I can make with this beautiful colour on my structure.

How come dolphins can be living in Amazon river? It is quite rare and they are threatened to get extinct because of pollution of the water.

Sometimes when you feel nothing is valuable and worthwhile, you can’t push yourself anymore and you can’t hear anything but blaming yourself so that reincarnation sounds like the worst curse for your whole life, try to find any video clip you can to have a look at the life at Amazon river. Just imagine you are like one of those beautiful pink dolphins. Nothing but swimming in the river under the sun and anything else doesn’t matter at all..

After today I will be in Sydney to be involved in Mindfulness training for a week. (깨달음의 장)

See you in a week.

Day 25 : Work 25. Blue stairs

Definitely the inspiration is from architecture modelling. I would like to experiment how it will look like and how much depth it can have if I realise the forms into small wearable object such as brooches or necklaces. Using colours is fascinating and the perforation of different sorts in unknown way gives much more excitement to the structure. This sculptural piece is not finished yet but has been one of my favourites so far.

One of the purposes for making one piece per each working day is my effort to be self-awakening and mindful in my practice as well as my life. That is all that matters.

Day 24 : Work 24. Mind works.

I have premade free form of colourful structures in my drawer. Today along with other jobs which need to be finished I took a couple of them out and tried to complete the structure.

There were a couple of design elements such as lines, form, space, shape and colour and the principals such as proportion, balance, movement, rhythm, variety etc.

Interesting to know that all those years later I am happily following the basic concepts I learnt from school. I believe my works’ originality but maybe there is no such great rule of creation. What I have seen, planned and made with my hands just guide me to broaden my practice.

It is just like following the philosophy of Mahayana Buddhism that Nothing is certain in this world. Only everything is the outcome of the action that mind works on. We just live in the world where those who would like to become a Buda some day are working very hard individually and correspondingly.

Which world am I living in? Process matters.

Day 23 : Work 23. Pervasion

“Form”을 만드는 이유? Space를 창조하기 위해.

Space

….. 내 삶이다…..

내 identity 이다. (작업실 노트)

Translation.

Why do I make “Form”? To create “Space”. After creating space I can be pervaded cozily. What can be pervaded? My spirit will be in then generate meaning. Why do I continuously make “Form”? “Form”is creation, time and the space my hands make so that … my life… My identity… (Visual diary)

Day 22 : Work 22. Quite familiar

Green & Black earrings and pendants.

Green & Black earrings and pendants.

I have been made these broken looking green hexagon pieces ready to be used for any potential structure in the future. It is really fun to use these intuitively and intentionally. These are on the process of completing hexagon earrings with 2 different colours (blue+black, red+black, yellow+black).

They are definitely one of my classics and best sellers since 2015 but I do hope I can make some more variety of them. However, how can I do it? It is also a starting point to build up something different.

Day 21 : Work 21. Hopeful babbling

For almost a month and through over 20 pieces of wearable object making What Have I got? What kind of insight to my practice have I built up?

  • It was not unfamiliar thing at all for me to make one piece per working day at the studio. But I have tried to stretch myself into making something more interesting. something more focused. something talking about me more.

  • People say that when you travel you try to see something interesting, different, exciting etc around you but the only thing you could really see better and more is indeed yourself. I have been thinking about it and I couldn’t agree more. Through one month of journey of diligence I could see what kind of person I am a little better. It is not just about what I like or don’t like but about how I would like to think, respond and try to improve myself. I love hard working, being aware, and the most importantly with all this task I am so happy at the studio everyday.

  • However, only by making these production work (not all of theml) which I have been making for over decade to fill up the task will not be enough as it will only lead me where I am.. I would like to get somewhere deeper, bluer so that hopeful.

Works formed and sandblasted before surface treated.

Today I have delivered some part of my works of the month for the project to powder coaters. Is my project going on well? I guess so. What have I got so far? More than 20 wearable objects and over 50 structures and forms. I will think about more carefully next couple of days and get back to this. … Looks like celebration! Looks like festival! Looks like fete!

Day 19 : Work 19. Material practice in Craft and Design

I went to this Forum yesterday arvo. It was hot and humid day and so much like the last bit of summer lingering and denying letting go. I was a little bit late and when I got there they were showing this video clip called “The future is handmade” . I remembered the video about handmade and craftsmanship as I had already seen that on youtube a couple of weeks ago while I was trying to figure out the rationale of handmade using industrial materials.

The forum was interesting but even though the host’s effort to put material practice in the middle of subject matter I couldn’t quite get the objective of the forum made clear only by listening their discussion. However, one of the speakers, Maree Clarke , Aboriginal designer and artist, and her necklace made with dead kangaroo teeth drew my attention. Her materials and the practice involves the knowledge and history of her ethical background. Also the community she is working with and the collaboration she has been doing was the best story about “Material practice in craft and design”.

I went to the forum to listen to Curator, Kevin Murray and meet other people from Academics so I would love to be more familiar with those words they use and help my practice in any how.

In the end I had a great chance to think about my material practice, slow movement in craft and design and etc. I haven’t got any wisdom or insight about it through my project yet but I am sure I can get there.

Anyway I still went to the studio in between and finished my job to do.

“Why have I been using Perforated mild steel so long time?” Some key words in my mind. Korean. Steel, Australia, form, space, structure, pick up something unknown at unfamiliar space, just like immigration.

Day 18 : Work 18. Excitement in the middle of a day. (Mountain Road)

I talked about the excitement I ended up with yesterday. This could be the new series of perforated mildsteel bangle and plus. All the years of my practice I have been looking for wearable unexpected form.

WEARABLE + UNEXPECTED (Not unwearable + expected)

And when I can see where this can go I am so excited and pleased.

Thinking what is happening when I can see where this can go?

Definitely the design or form or the structure has got integrity. It means there is no interruptions of anything unnecessary. I am not talking about simplicity. It doesn’t matter the design is simple or complicated there must exist some complexity.

I think this big size bangle has got potential I can build up and go further for my dream team which has got integrity and complexity like any beautiful mountain with the roads surrounding to lead you to the top.

Day 17 : Work 17. Multiple jobs and one excitement.

At the studio today I have done multiple jobs which include one pendant which was in my drawer long time is finished to donate for Melbourne politech auction, fixed round bangle before black powder coated and finished one stud earrings. However, at the end of the day I had a great excitement. The excitement with new trial will be revealed soon hopefully. Anyway here are the jobs done.
