Day 85: Leakage
Almost a year ago there were a couple of rain leaks from the studio ceiling. My books were wet and so was my drill press. The ceiling is temporarily fixed now but whenever it is pouring down I always gaze around nervously to see if there are any water drops coming from anywhere.
“Leakage”(pendant)- mild steel, brass, silver solder, parts and fittings from old watches, patina, enamel paint and silk cord. And screw cut by using tap and dies for 2 components
It was interesting to observe the leakage traces on my mild steel sheet. I was inspired by this and thought how can I not make one illustrating rusty sheet with pipes!
I soldered those pipes constructed into the holes of the perforated mild steel sheet and sandblasted the whole piece. The rusty looking stain or trace on the sheet and pipes are from using a couple of different patinas. I have used them at wide intervals to see how they draw a suitable rusty colour on the object. For the last step I sprayed black enamel paint for dusty looking black speckles.
Looking back now all the inspiration for my pipe works started from my inspection of the water leaks from the ceiling. At that time it was agony that to go through it but now it has become one of the crucial moments of my practice. So many things you can learn from the agony in the past…

약 1년전 쯤 작업실 천장으로 부터 몇번의 비가 새는 것을 겪었던 것으로 기억된다. 내 책들이 젖었고 내 드릴 프레스도 젖어버렸다. 천장은 임시방편으로 고쳐지기는 했지만 비가 퍼부을 때마다 나는 어딘가에서 물이 떨어지고 있지는 않는지 아주 불안하게 살핀다.
그러나 그 무엇보다도 내 연강판 위에 물이 샌 자국을 관찰하는 것은 흥미로웠다. 그래서 내가 어찌 파이프와 함께 녹슨 철판을 그리는 그런 작품을 만들지 않을 수 있겠는가! 나는 내가 만든 파이프 구조물을 천공된 연강 판의 구멍들에 땜질 하였고 그 전체를 분사기로 쐬었다. 철판이나 파이프 위에 녹슨 흔적처럼 보이는 것은 몇개의 다른 파티나를 사용한 결과물이다. 나는 그들이 어떻게 적절한 녹슨 색을 오브제위에 그리는지를 관찰하면서 긴 시간의 간격을 가지고 사용하였다. 마지막 단계로 먼지 같이 보이는 검은 반점들을 위해서 에나멜 페인트를 뿌렸다.
지나고 나서 돌아보면 내 파이프 작품들의 모든 영감이 천장의 누수를 잡아내기 위한 나의 관찰로 부터 시작되었다. 그때는 내가 그것을 겪어야하는 것이 고통이었으나 지금에 와서는 그것이 내 작업들의 중요한 순간 중의 하나가 된 것이다. 과거의 고통으로 배울 수 있는 것들은 참 많다.
“누수”(팬던트)- 연강, 황동, 은땜, 오래된 시계들의 부품, 파티나, 에나멜 페인트, 실크코드 사용. 그리고 두개의 부품에 탭과 다이세트를 사용해 스크류컷을 만들다.
